I recently read an article on Etsy about making time for your creativity. Great thought.... except life tends to get in the way! My day is packed full of work, husband, 2 children, housework, deciding what to make for dinner...... whew! I can go on and on. Where do I find the time to create?
I sometimes feel like the guy on this clock, just trying to hang on. I don't know about you, but I am a creature of habit. I feel better when I follow a routine. I know what to expect and when to expect it. Where does creativity come into play?
I try to save time just for me, usually in the morning before the kiddos get up. Great plan, right? In theory, but I can't just turn on the creativity like a light switch. Creativity is a funny being. It doesn't like to be on a schedule, it just happens. Sometimes I get an urge to create and I just go with it. I can be in my sewing room, in the middle of a project, and before you know it, the entire day flies by. Crazy!
I guess I need to be better about carving out a little time each day to create. Where do you find the time?

Sometimes just going into the sewing room and cleaning, playing with fabric, etc. will get my creative juices flowing. Yet, I have 10 containers with unfinished quilts or fabrics picked out for quilts just sitting there! One of the things that I need to get better on is keeping a list of the color of fabric I need. Beth
ReplyDeleteThe list is a great idea, Beth! Every time I choose a product, I buy fabric that I need. I come home, and inevitably find it in my stash. Never fails! LOL!
ReplyDeleteOne of the things you need to do is involve your kids in your craft time. If they're old enough, teach them how to do something or introduce them to kits and such. Little ones can also use play dough, washable markers, crayons, and washable paints with little supervision. Take that time to be creative yourself. I have 5, so I know how hard it can be! I also take 1 day each week to sit down and plan the week's meals - usually 5-6 of them are in the crock pot - which leaves me MANY hours to be creative. When it's time for dinner, turn off the crock and sit down to eat it! I look at it like this: Others work a job out of the house everyday and they have to do the work and finish it in one day. Being creative IS my job. I don't let the "other" stuff get in the way! It's not so much finding the time to be creative, it's figuring out how to minimize the time spent on other things.
ReplyDeleteGood advice, Tammy. I currently work outside the home. It's really hard for me to put the house hold chores out of my mind. My kids are pretty good about giving me the time to sew, though. I only have 2 little ones. I can't imagine 5! Wow! My hat's off to you.
ReplyDeleteThis really hits home for me! I love your post!
